FAQ

What does specialty coffee mean?

The term “Specialty Coffee” was first used in 1974 by Erna Knutsen in an issue of Tea & Coffee Trade Journal.  Knutsen used this term to describe beans of the best flavor which are produced in special microclimates. Further more, coffee beans should have scores of 80 points or above on a 100 point scale according to the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) to be considered “specialty”. The unique flavors and tastes are a result of the special characteristics and composition of the soils in which they are produced.

As a matter of fact the definition is not limited/or related only to the coffee bean, basic fundamentals behind this definition imply that specialty coffee beans would always be well prepared, freshly roasted, and properly brewed.

Can I buy grinded coffee?

Of course! By default we make our shipments as whole beans unless specifically mentioned otherwise in your order page. We can send your coffee grinded as well, just let us know!

Do you ship everywhere?

At Origin is a mid-town microlot roastery with a boutique attention and specialty coffee focus, unfortunately we don't ship outside Canada.

Shipment rate is calculated at check-out and added on.

What’s your roasting frequency?

We roast once a week and the roasting date is stamped at the lower right corner of the bag. We suggest to wait 6 to 8 days for degassing before start using to obtain richer taste of the bean.

We recommend grinding our coffee right before your brewing process. Please note that how you’ll brew along with other factors (grind size, water temperature) will drastically affect the taste of your coffee. Selecting the right brewing style (chemex, filter, etc..) is important for the best specialty coffee experience.

Can I pick-up my order?

Yes! You can pick up from our Midtown Toronto location, please click here for map directions.

How much do I pay for shipment?

Your shipment rate is automatically calculated at check out

We always ship fresh coffee and recommend giving 1 week for degassing after our roasting process, please check the roasting date and if it’s too young, give our coffee some time to get its best taste. Any questions? We’re glad to help, please reach out!
